This artwork is a deeply personal exploration of the challenges women face in healthcare, particularly the trauma caused by medical malpractice. Using my own medical scans, along with those of my collaborator, I wanted to highlight the ways in which the female body is often dissected, scrutinized, and misunderstood by medical systems. The x-rays and anatomical images in this piece are not just clinical representations of our bodies but symbols of the vulnerability and neglect women often experience.
The layering of these scans with surreal, fragmented imagery reflects the alienation that comes from being treated as an object rather than a person in the medical world. The distorted, animalistic face undergoing cosmetic transformation is a metaphor for how women are frequently reshaped, whether physically through surgery or emotionally by societal expectations. The hands that manipulate these bodies symbolize external control, a loss of autonomy that women have long struggled to reclaim.
This piece serves as both a critique and a reclamation. By integrating my medical scans into the artwork, I assert control over my body’s representation, turning what could be seen as evidence of trauma into a statement of resilience and agency. The work becomes a conversation about the body—one that addresses the failures of healthcare systems while also celebrating the power of art to give voice to those who have been silenced. Through this piece, I hope to raise awareness of the often invisible struggles women like Dati and I endure in healthcare.
