Project #2 Artist Statement

"Nighthawks" has solidified its place as one of the most iconic images of 20th-century American art, celebrated for its poignant depiction of urban isolation and existential loneliness. This painting has resonated across generations, inspiring countless references and parodies in popular culture, from films and television to advertisements. In my project, I seek to engage with this iconic work through the lens of remix culture by utilizing artificial intelligence to make subtle adjustments to the composition. These minor interventions aim to subvert and re-contextualize the original meaning, while preserving the painting's recognizable elements.

By prompting a reevaluation of its themes, I invite the viewer to consider how these small yet significant changes alter their perception of both the artwork and the era it represents. Subtle modifications can often be more impactful than overt transformations, as they introduce a quiet sense of unease or provoke reflection without disrupting the fundamental familiarity of the piece. This approach highlights the fine line between reality and artificiality in contemporary life, asking viewers to reflect on how much has changed—and how much has stayed the same—since Hopper’s time. I am particularly interested in how these small changes to the composition can transform the narrative, embedding new meanings while questioning and changing the painting's core exploration of loneliness and isolation within an urbanized context.

My project sits at the intersection of remix culture and artistic reinterpretation, where the act of making small changes through AI allows me to challenge the original work while still honoring its essence. By remixing "Nighthawks," I am not merely altering its visual elements but also expanding its narrative, encouraging viewers to reflect on the implications of these minor adjustments. How does a slight change in a familiar figure's posture, or the subtle introduction of modern technology, shift the viewer's relationship with the work? In exploring these questions, I aim to evoke a dialogue between past and present, ultimately questioning the ways in which human connection and isolation have evolved.
