Project #3 Artist Statement
As an artist, my work delves into the intersection of traditional painting practices and emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. My latest series explores the evolving relationship between human creativity and AI-generated art, prompting viewers to reflect on the significance of painting in the age of artificial intelligence.
Central to this body of work is a conceptual piece depicting a biomorphic abstraction of an artificial body reaching out for a phone, drawing inspiration from Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam." This artwork serves as a metaphor for the contemporary human experience, reflecting our reliance on technology and the blurred boundaries between the natural and the artificial.
In this piece, I confront the viewer with a reflective and confrontational experience. By juxtaposing a traditional painting of the scene with an AI-generated artwork of identical subject matter, I challenge the viewer to contemplate the essence of creativity and the role of human agency in artistic expression. The AI-generated artwork is presented directly on top of the traditional painting, obscuring it from view, except from the sides.
This deliberate juxtaposition raises fundamental questions about the nature of art and the distinction between human and machine creativity. Is painting necessary in a world where machines can create art? By choosing to paint in the age of artificial intelligence, I highlight the importance of the artistic process over the outcome, and the human experience over the output.
Moreover, by challenging the traditional notion of authorship and originality in art, I blur the boundary between creator and creation. I question whether the act of painting by hand imbues a piece with more inherent value or authenticity compared to artwork generated by AI algorithms.
Through my work, I aim to stimulate dialogue on the future of art and the evolving role of the artist in relation to emerging technologies. I invite viewers to consider the impact of our advancements on artistic practices and to ponder whether AI-generated artwork can possess the same level of originality as human-created paintings.
Ultimately, my exploration of the intertwined relationship between art and artificial intelligence seeks to provoke thought and reflection on the ever-changing landscape of contemporary art. By challenging conventional notions of creativity and authorship, I strive to push the boundaries of artistic expression and inspire new ways of thinking about the role of technology in shaping our artistic endeavors.
